❤️ A 16-Year-Old Builds an Emergency Alert App for People Who Can’t Hear the Warning

Gavin Phelan is 16 years old and about to begin his junior year at Cape Elizabeth High School in Maine.

He had no programming experience.

But after researching safety challenges faced by deaf and hard-of-hearing people, Gavin identified a potentially life-threatening problem:

What happens when an emergency warning depends upon hearing a sound?

He began developing an app called ALRM.

When activated in designated areas, the app uses a smartphone’s microphone to listen for loud sounds that could signal an emergency, such as a smoke detector. If it detects a qualifying sound, the phone can vibrate and display an alert.

The project was partly inspired by the 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, in which four of the 18 people killed were deaf or hard of hearing. Gavin’s app is now available for Apple and Android phones and has attracted interest from members of Maine’s deaf community and the Maine Turnpike Authority.

This isn’t a hearing aid.

But it highlights something that’s easy to overlook when discussing hearing technology.

Hearing loss isn’t only about conversations, television and restaurants.

🤖 Anker Is Entering the OTC Hearing Aid Market

Another major consumer-electronics company is entering hearing care.

At IFA 2026 in Berlin,  ⁠Anker unveiled its first self-fitting OTC receiver-in-canal hearing aid, powered by the company’s THUS AI audio processor.

That’s significant because Anker is already a familiar consumer brand in charging products, headphones and Soundcore audio equipment.

Its new hearing aid uses four beam-forming microphones and AI processing designed around one of the biggest complaints among hearing-aid users:

Understanding speech in noisy places.

The hearing aids are designed to identify and emphasize a voice in front of the listener while reducing competing background noise.

Anker is also applying some of its consumer-electronics experience to usability.

The company says the devices will provide up to 12 hours of use, with the charging case extending total use to 36 hours. A five-minute charge is expected to provide approximately two additional hours.

The charging case itself includes a display showing battery level and the selected listening program, along with physical buttons that allow users to change modes without relying entirely on a smartphone.

Beta testing is expected to begin this month, with a commercial U.S. launch planned for early 2027. Pricing hasn’t been announced.

Those details matter because this isn’t yet a product consumers can independently evaluate in stores.

Its AI performance claims remain manufacturer claims until independent testing and real-world experience tell us more.

Still, Anker’s arrival continues an unmistakable trend.

Apple.

Samsung.

And now Anker.

Major consumer-technology companies increasingly see hearing assistance as part of the broader personal-audio market.

🔬 Could Being Physically Fit Help You Hear Better in a Noisy Restaurant?

Anyone who wears hearing aids knows this frustration.

You can hear perfectly well in a quiet room.

Then you walk into a crowded restaurant and suddenly understanding conversation becomes exhausting.

That’s because speech understanding isn’t simply an ear problem.

Your brain also has to separate voices from competing sounds, remember what was just said and determine which information deserves your attention.

Researchers at Northeastern University are investigating whether cardiovascular fitness could help with that mental processing.

Their ongoing study measures participants’ cardiorespiratory fitness and then tests their ability to repeat sentences presented against background noise.

The early results are intriguing.

So far, participants with higher fitness levels are performing about 15% better on speech-in-noise tests than less-fit participants—roughly one or two additional words understood per sentence.

But this needs an important qualification.

This is an ongoing study in its first phase.

Researchers have found an association between fitness and better speech-in-noise performance. They have not yet shown that beginning an exercise program will improve someone’s hearing.

That distinction matters.

What the study does reinforce is something hearing-aid users experience every day:

Successful communication depends on more than what reaches the ears.

The brain matters too.

🛡️ CONSUMER ALERT: Eargo, Lexie and Go Hearing Owners Have an Important September 15 Deadline

This may be the most immediately actionable story of the week for some HArC readers.

We previously reported that  ⁠LXE Hearing—the parent company of Eargo, Lexie Hearing and Go Hearing—was winding down its U.S. operations.

The company has now published more specific instructions for existing customers.

September 15 is the important date to remember.

LXE says customers should submit warranty or repair requests on or before September 15, 2026. After that date, the company says it will no longer accept new warranty or repair requests through the normal process.

Customer service is currently scheduled to remain available until October 22.

After September 15, consumers who believe they have a monetary claim against an LXE Hearing company may submit a formal Proof of Claim to the company’s assignee, but LXE specifically warns that filing a claim does not guarantee payment.

There is another issue consumers shouldn’t overlook:

the apps.

LXE says its current app is expected to continue functioning locally on a phone if it has been installed and synchronized before its removal date. But there will no longer be software or security updates or technical support, and compatibility with future phone operating-system updates cannot be guaranteed.

If you own an Eargo, Lexie or Go Hearing device:

• Don’t wait until September 15 if you currently have a problem.

• Submit any warranty or repair request now.

• Consider obtaining needed domes, tips, wax guards or other consumable parts while support and inventory remain available.

• Download and save your device’s manuals and guides.

• Keep records of your purchase, warranty and previous service.

• Be cautious about deleting a working hearing-aid app from your phone.

HArC Consumer Tip: This is an excellent example of why the company behind a hearing aid matters almost as much as the device. Apps, replacement parts, warranties and customer support can become critical several years after the original purchase.

💡 Practical Guidance: Before Buying a Connected Hearing Aid, Ask One More Question

Modern hearing aids increasingly depend upon software.

That’s generally a good thing.

Apps can provide hearing tests, remote adjustments, program controls, streaming, battery information and personalized settings.

But the LXE situation reveals another consideration consumers should add to their shopping checklist:

“What happens to this hearing aid if the app or company disappears?”

Before buying an app-dependent hearing device, consider asking:

• Can the hearing aid still function normally without the app?

• Can a hearing professional adjust it without the manufacturer’s cloud service?

• Are replacement parts proprietary?

• How long does the warranty last?

• Who actually provides warranty service?

• Will the device still work if you replace your smartphone?

• Does the retailer provide support independently of the manufacturer?

None of these questions is as exciting as AI processors or new listening features.

But three years after your purchase, they could matter much more.

As hearing devices become increasingly sophisticated, choosing wisely requires looking beyond the device itself.

Performance matters.

Comfort matters.

Price matters.

But increasingly, software, support and the long-term health of the company behind the technology matter too.

Sometimes it’s a 16-year-old realizing that a phone already in someone’s pocket could potentially alert them to danger.
